Mental health and addiction services in Taranaki include acute inpatient care, intensive psychiatric care, services for the elderly, psychology, alcohol and drug counselling and also specialist services for tamariki and rangatahi.

The Mental Health Assessment & Brief Care (ABC) team is a fully mobile crisis service for responding to psychiatric emergencies in the region. The team operates 24 hours a day every day.

The Alcohol and Drug Service provides outpatient assessment and treatment services for client with alcohol and/or drug misuse, or people affected by another's alcohol and/or drug addiction. The service operates from Taranaki Base Hospital, Hawera Hospital and clinics in Waitara and Ōpunake.
The Mental Health Service for Older People service provides assessment, treatment, care and support to people in Taranaki who are over the age of 65 and experience significant mental health problems including dementia. The service usually sees people in their own homes.

Our teams provide a specialist service throughout Taranaki, for 0 to 18 year olds experiencing severe mental health difficulties.
The Child and Adolescent Mental Health team works from New Plymouth, Stratford and Hāwera, and offers a number of satellite clinics in health centres and schools.

Te Puna Waiora is the acute inpatient adult mental health unit, within Taranaki Base Hospital catering for the needs of people with acute mental illness.
The unit comprises an Intensive Psychiatric Care unit, six psychogeriatric beds and 20 adult inpatient beds. Patients have their own bedroom, a selection of group therapy rooms and a range of recreational facilities.
Adult Mental Health Psychology is available for adults over the age of 18 experiencing mental health difficulties.
We also work with the Perinatal Mental Health team at Te Whatu Ora Taranaki and can offer psychological support to women who are pregnant and after giving birth and their whānau.

We are located at Taranaki Base Hospital and Hāwera Hospital.
Health psychologists provide short term, problem focused psychological assessment and treatment for distress associated with a diagnosis, treatment, or injury which is interfering with daily activities.
There are outpatient services available for people who are having investigation and treatment for cancer. There is a psychologist role with the Persistent Pain team.
The health psychology service is available to adults age 16 years and over.
The Paediatric Psychology service is available for children with medical and neurodevelopmental problems. Children and whānau are seen at Taranaki Base Hospital's Child and Adolescent Community Centre or inpatients on Ward 2B, or at Hāwera Hospital.
Medical conditions:
We see tamariki with psychological problems (such as adjustment, behavioural) related to a medical or neurological condition. This can include Type 1 diabetes, Cystic Fibrosis, persistent pain (including headaches), chronic fatigue and tic disorders.
Neurodevelopmental:
We see children for assessment for possible Intellectual Disability and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (usually over 8 years) and Autistic Spectrum Disorder (over 5 years 6 months).
