Infrastructure guidance

Guidance and standards that support the planning, design, delivery and maintenance of New Zealand’s health infrastructure. These guidelines, tools and resources help ensure health facilities are safe, effective, compliant with building and design requirements, and aligned with the Government’s broader goals for sustainability, resilience and quality health service delivery.

Design Guidance Note: Fire Engineering Design for New Zealand Public Hospitals

The Fire Engineering Design Guide for Hospitals explains the minimum fire safety requirements for hospital buildings in New Zealand. It makes sure hospital designs meet the standards set out in the New Zealand Building Code.

The guide helps clear up areas of fire design rules that have previously been unclear. In the past, this lack of clarity caused project delays and added costs.

The guide was developed with the Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment (MBIE) and Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ). It has been approved by our Executive Leadership Team and is fully supported by both MBIE and FENZ.

Design guidance note: Technical guidelines for the seismic and structural design of hospital buildings

This guideline sets the minimum earthquake performance standard we require for health service buildings. It ensures facilities meet Health New Zealand’s Seismic Policy, comply with the New Zealand Building Code for public hospitals, and support the Government’s commitment to climate change action.
