BreastScreen Aotearoa National Policy and Quality Standards
The BreastScreen Aotearoa National Policy and Quality Standards outlines the policy framework and quality requirements for delivering New Zealand’s national breast screening programme. It applies to all providers involved in BreastScreen Aotearoa and aims to ensure services are safe, effective, consistent, and of high quality nationwide.
The document sets expectations across the full screening pathway, including programme governance, client information and consent, screening and assessment processes, workforce capability, equipment standards, data management, and quality assurance.
Originally published in 2013 and updated in November 2022 to reflect current practice and quality expectations.

The BreastScreen Aotearoa Partnership Action and Equity Group provides independent advice on policy, strategy, research, and operations to support continuous improvement in the programme.
BreastScreen Aotearoa interactive coverage data tool
This online tool shows how many people are taking part in the BreastScreen Aotearoa programme and:
- helps monitor how well the programme is reaching those eligible for screening
- shows where improvements could be made.
