Maternity clinics — Canterbury

Christchurch Women's Hospital holds maternity clinics for pregnant women. We have clinics for diabetes, methadone, women who need an interpreter service or extra support, birth after caesarean and for care after a birth with anaesthetics.

Services we provide

We hold maternity clinics 4 times a week. Your midwife or doctor is welcome to be part of this consultation. We will provide your midwife or doctor with a letter after each consultation.

there are specialists available for you to see at the maternity clinics twice a week if you:

  • had a medical condition before pregnancy
  • developed a medical condition during pregnancy.

Diabetes education clinics

This is a multidisciplinary clinic held each Monday with a team including an:

  • obstetrician
  • physician
  • midwife
  • dietician.

Methadone in pregnancy

These clinics are held each Tuesday with a dedicated midwife and team from community and alcohol services (CADS).

Core midwifery clinic

Our core midwifery clinics are held every Wednesday. They provide appointments with midwives for pregnant women who need interpreter services or extra support. Christchurch Women's Hospital does not have lead maternity carers.

Birth after caesarean section clinic

These are held each Thursday morning. You will be referred here by your midwife or doctor early in your pregnancy to discuss how you might give birth for this pregnancy. You will be seen by an obstetrician.

Anaesthetic clinic

Before your caesarean section, you will be seen in this clinic by a midwife and anaesthetist to complete your pre-admission. These clinics are held on a Monday and Wednesday afternoon.
